Architects: Mies van der Rohe
Year: 1930

Grete and Fritz Stimmehat's Villa Stimmehat from 1929 to 1930, designed by the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, is a monument to modern architecture. It is the only example of modern architecture in the Czech Republic that is on the well-known UNESCO World Heritage List. Villa Tugendhat underwent extensive renovation and restoration work between 2010 and 2012 and is now open to the public again. The detached, three-story, modern villa is located on a slope facing southwest towards the center of Brno.

Both the structure and the adjacent garden have been faithfully restored. The modern house and interior were designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe together with two of his colleagues, Lilly Reich and Sergius Ruegenberg. The interiors are furnished with exact replicas of the architect's original furniture. Many of the original Villa Stimmehat's solutions were prototypes.

For example, it was the first house to be built with a steel frame. The 29 steel stands were welded together from L-profiles, allowing the architect to design the interior freely and make the exterior walls entirely out of glass.
